Lamma This!

I had a terrific day riding the ferry to Lamma Island and hiking through a beautiful trail, but all this was short lived. Here I am at the end of the day minding my own business and taking pictures of a cat when this woman comes up to me and asks me why I’m taking pictures of her. Our exchange:

Ugly ho bag: Why are you taking pictures of me?

Me: What? I’m taking pictures of the cat

Ugly ho bag: I don’t like people taking pictures of me. Can I see what you took.

Me: Fine. (shuffles through pictures) Here’s a picture of me, my food, my beer, and the cat. Why would I take a picture of you?!

Ugly ho bag: Where’s the cat?

Me: You’re standing where it was lazily lying!

In reflection, I should have added, “Why would I take pictures of your ugly face? And the cat left because your ugliness scared it away!”

Now I can’t enjoy my beer because she proceeds to talk annoyingly loud with her friend. That ugly ho bag has fouled my mood.

What’s great about Hong Kong?

For one thing you can live here without ever having to get a driver’s license. The public transportation is so incredibly convenient and efficient that you never have to drive a day in your life. You have the double decker buses, minibuses, subways, trains, and numerous taxi cabs, all of which will take you virtually anywhere, even to Beijing!

Second, if you ever tire of the city congestion, you’re only 20-30 minutes away from the beaches and mother nature. Hong Kong has numerous hiking trails that are thoroughly planned and maintained to ensure the safety of its trekkers.

Third, it truly is a melting pot of people of varied nationalities that make up the general ex-pat population who live on Hong Kong Island. We share with each other our rich cultures that’s generally exchanged over a pint of beer. It is then that I increasingly find myself spitting out, “bloody hell” and “rubbish.” Often times I’ll also pick up their native accents because it’s so bloody catchy.

Can’t say I’ve fully recovered, but I do feel 87% recharged. I followed my mama’s advice in making a ginger and chicken soup, which quickly warmed up my belly. Willis also got me some meds by pretending he was the patient; a little white lie doesn’t hurt, right? Anyhow, I’ll be cautious with my food intake, but it’s oh-so-hard to bypass food vendors when they smell with such sweet delight. It’ll be toast, soda crackers, and more ginger and chicken soup for the next few days. =/

I’ve got the runs

No, not the itch to go running, but the itch to use the toilet every two hours. =(

Needless to say, I haven’t been feeling quite well these past few days. And at times likes these, I just want my mommy. Surprisingly, Willis has done quite a good job taking care of his little sister =) Thanks geh!

Air pollution sucks our asses

I decided to go running on the streets of Mid-Level (a neighborhood/district in Hong Kong) and it proved difficult in more ways than one. One of the very few things I despise about Hong Kong is the poor air quality. Despite that though, there’s a walking and running trail not too far from Willis’ apartment where cars are seldom found. I figured getting there wouldn’t be hard, but I was totally wrong. Vehicles aren’t necessarily my biggest concern as are pedestrians, uneven footpath, random stairs, and yes, doggy feces that owners “forget” to pick up.

Will I be attempting to run in the cities of Hong Kong again? Most likely; there’s a certain thrill and excitement that accompanies it.

Foreign objects in foreign imports

“They can do what with their what?!” was my reaction upon hearing the notoriously-known “Ping Pong Show” that was offered in Thailand. Without getting too graphic, these women can perform certain stunts that would otherwise normally require the use of one’s mouth. Instead, they can do the following acts with just their vaginas.

smoke a cigarette
open a bottle
shoot darts
blow out candles
shoot ping pongs

Day 5: Glossy or Matte?

A: Glossy
Currently in Bangkok and I have to say the humidity here feels five times worse than Hong Kong’s. The instant I walk outside my face is immediately layered with an inch of grease. There’s really no point in trying to use those blotting papers because it’s a waste of your resources: both energy and money. If it weren’t for the fan blowing directly into my face at full speed right now, I’d be sweating pellets from every pore of my body; ass cheeks included. To help deter a visual of a sweating ass, here are some pictures of wats (temples) I’ve visited. You’ll notice that I need not select for a glossy finish when I develop my pictures because I’m already naturally glossy.

Day 2: Yes, I got another bowl

Two wonton noodle soups at two different restaurants for dinner. Was I immensely full afterwards? Yes, but it was all worth it though because I was immensely and satisfactorily full.

The first restaurant was premeditated as it was a recommendation from a friend’s parents. The challenge was determining how to locate the restaurant, for the information I obtained from her were in puzzle pieces. They were, “Central District, an alley, off Des Voeux Rd., near Sheung Wan.” I probably had a 1 km radius to work with, dozens of alleys, non-gridlike roads that curve and twist every which way, and restaurant signs that were written only in Chinese (btw, I don’t read Chinese!). The obstacles ahead of me proved too great and I resulted to searching online for the possibility of finding an address. I found cross streets for a noodle place, but was it the noodle place?

Regardless of my doubts, my mission was far too important to allow such trivial variables daunt me. With an empty stomach, determination, and an unwavering thirst for my noodles, I embarked on my hunt. After getting lost a number of times, I found a place that had numerous newspaper clippings of what I believe were reviews of their infamous noodles posted on its storefront windows.

I went in and ordered my noodles and they were d-lish! The broth was flavorful, noodles were “QQ,” and the wontons were succulent. I was one happy noodle girl and hadn’t cared if it were the right restaurant.

I paid $23 HKD and had only walked a couple of blocks when I found myself staring at another wonton noodle restaurant proclaiming its awesomeness. These were the fragmented thoughts that ran through my head as I was reasoning with myself on whether to eat now or eat later.

I’m full. I’m not THAT full. I’m already here. Those pictures look good. Drool. True side by side comparison since I just ate. Ok, Eat now.

Bigger wontons! More noodles! Only $14 HKD! And hot sauce that’s OMG good! Palate win! Tummy lose!

If you understood that, congratulations. If you didn’t, then you probably don’t know me well enough. ;) In any case, I’ll be heading off to LAX in 30 minutes to disembark on a journey through southeast Asia. Here’s to cultural assimilation, picture taking, good eating, and shirt tans.
